The death toll from floods in the Philippines has risen to 76. The floods were caused by the influence of summer storm ‘Trami’.
‘Trami’ hit the northeastern coast of Luzon, the most populous island of the Philippines, on Thursday. The storm caused flooding and landslides.
Although Trami was initially reported to have killed 26 people, the death toll has now risen to 76.
Typhoon Trami moved west from the Philippines towards the South China Sea early Friday. The death toll began to rise soon after and new reports of victims were released.
A government figure on Thursday said 193,000 people had been evacuated due to the floods. Roads turned into rivers and some towns were submerged in volcanic ash loosened by the storm.
The storm’s damage was most severe on the broken peninsula. Police said at least 30,000 residents were evacuated due to flooding.
Roads there have been flooded and become like rivers. Schools and government offices have been closed in the northern Philippines due to the storm.
