Erdogan calls on Italy to lift sanctions on Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria during the Assad regime. He made the call in a phone call with Meloni on Thursday (January 9).

According to the report, during a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday, President Erdogan highlighted the importance of taking immediate steps for the reconstruction of Syria. This includes lifting sanctions in the post-Assad period, the Presidential Communications Directorate said.
In the phone call, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional and global developments, including the Syrian crisis.
The Presidential Communications Directorate said that emphasizing the importance of taking steps without delay for the reconstruction of Syria, President Erdogan said that Italy’s lifting of sanctions on Damascus would benefit the process.
Earlier, during a visit to Qatar, Syria’s new Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani met with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani. During the meeting, he requested Qatar to mediate in lifting the US government’s sanctions on Syria.
