Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was ready to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and was waiting for Damascus’ response to Ankara’s request.

He said this at a press conference before leaving for the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly session on Saturday.

At this time, Erdogan said, “We have already expressed our desire to meet with Bashar al-Assad to normalize relations between Türkiye and Syria.”

The Turkish president said, “We are waiting for Syria’s response.” “We are ready to discuss… I believe that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new chapter in our relations.”

The Russian media Sputnik also published this comment of Erdogan in its report.

Incidentally, after the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, relations between Damascus and Ankara soured. But efforts to restore that relationship have increased in recent months.

In this regard, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said, if there is an opportunity for discussion to protect the national interests of Syria, he is also ready for a summit meeting with the Turkish leader.
