Threat of terrorist attack in Mumbai, police tight security

Central agencies have warned about the threat of a possible terrorist attack in the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. In such a situation, the Mumbai Police has strengthened the security across the city. A preventive exercise was also held to prevent terrorist attacks on Friday.

Indian news agency ANI quoted the Mumbai police as saying that all temples in the city have been alerted. Besides, it has been directed to inform the police immediately if any suspicious activity is observed.

Siddhivinayak temple trustee Raja Ram Deshmukh confirmed that they have received such instructions from the police.

Mumbai Police acted after receiving a warning from the central agency. In addition to conducting searches with trained dogs in populated areas including stations, airports, security has been strengthened.

According to police sources, in addition to several temples, additional police have been deployed in populated areas.

All Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) of the city have been directed to pay special attention to the security arrangements in their respective areas.

Just before Durga Puja, the residents of Mumbai are terrified of terror attacks. Apart from Ganesh Chaturthi in this month itself, next month there are festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali. The police is keeping a strict vigil to prevent any untoward incident.

Incidentally, in 2008, there were terrorist attacks in several places including Taj Hotel, CST Station, Kama Hospital, Leopold Cafe in Mumbai. 166 people died in that attack. Since then, there have been several threats of attacks in Mumbai from anonymous sources.
