War-torn Syria must not be allowed to become a center of terrorism. At the same time, the fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Islamic State (IS) must continue, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

He made these remarks at a press conference after talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday.

The Turkish president said about Syria at the time, “We must protect this country from becoming a center of terrorism. The fight against IS and the PKK and its affiliates was one of the main topics of today’s discussion.”

Erdogan stressed, “Turkey is the only country and the only ally of Syria that has defeated these two terrorist organizations. We will never allow these organizations to rise again. The fight must continue.”

He noted that the Syrian people alone cannot bear the burden of rebuilding their country and strengthening national security. Syria’s neighboring countries, friends and brotherly countries must take urgent action in this regard, with sufficient support from the European Union and international organizations. I am making this clear today.

Erdogan said that unfortunately, during the past 13 years when the Syrian people were being subjected to violence, the international community failed to provide them with adequate assistance. Now is the opportunity to correct this.

According to the Turkish leader, Syria’s reconstruction requires extensive assistance. He also said that Turkey has already reopened its embassy in Damascus.

Erdogan also stated that “Turkey will continue to support its Syrian brothers.”
