South Korean authorities on Monday dismissed four of the country’s top military commanders, local media reported, for their alleged involvement in the martial law.
The martial law was imposed by then-President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 3 last year, but he was forced to withdraw it within hours under intense pressure from parliament.
The dismissed military officers are Lieutenant General Yoo In-hyung, head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command; Major General Moon Sang-ho, head of the Defense Intelligence Command; Lieutenant General Lee Jin-woo, head of the Capital Defense Command; and Lieutenant General Kwak Jong-kun, head of the Army Special Warfare Command.
The officers are accused of participating in the martial law operation on December 3.
The country’s defense ministry said their dismissals will take effect on Tuesday (January 21).
Earlier on Monday, South Korean police raided the presidential office and seized documents related to the declaration of martial law.
At the same time, impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was accused of declaring martial law and was formally arrested, has been transferred to a single cell measuring 12 square meters at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, near Seoul. Such cells are usually used for 5-6 people.
History has been made through this. It is written that Yoon Suk-yeol is the first sitting president of South Korea to be formally arrested.
It is reported that he will be detained for a long time by court order.
Meanwhile, the four dismissed military officers will be officially informed of the decision on Tuesday. It has also been reported that legal action will be taken against Army Chief General Park An-soo.
This incident has caused a great stir in South Korea over martial law and the political system.
