Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the UN Security Council that Gaza and the West Bank are the homeland of the Palestinian people. They are not a bargaining chip in any political transaction.
Speaking at a Security Council meeting in New York on Tuesday (February 18), Wang Yi said that the future of Palestine must be determined on the basis of a two-state solution.
He said that Gaza and the West Bank are the homeland of the Palestinian people and are not a bargaining chip in any political transaction. Ensuring the right of the Palestinians to govern themselves is an important principle in the post-war governance of Gaza.
China presided over the meeting as it holds the presidency of the Security Council for February.
US President Donald Trump recently proposed a controversial proposal that calls for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and call for the relocation of Palestinians to other countries.
Trump’s proposal has caused strong reactions around the world. The Palestinians have made it clear that they will not give up their homeland. Egypt and Jordan, supported by Saudi Arabia, have rejected Trump’s call to provide shelter to the people of Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Trump’s proposal and said Israel is preparing to implement it.
Meanwhile, Egypt has launched a plan that would allow the reconstruction of Gaza without displacing Palestinians. This is seen as a countermeasure to Trump’s proposal.
Human rights groups say Trump’s plan is essentially a forced eviction, which is a potential war crime. Most European countries have also opposed the plan.
Wang Yi also said that if any country wants to make diplomatic institutions ineffective, it is unacceptable. The Security Council must rise above narrow geopolitical interests and ensure unity and cooperation.
He also said that the use of force, deception or blackmail is against diplomatic etiquette. Any unilateral sanctions imposed without the approval of the Security Council are legally baseless, illogical, and contrary to common sense.
