Unity talks between Hamas and Fatah leaders are set to take place in Cairo. A Hamas official confirmed this information to Reuters on Wednesday.
A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, said Taher al-Nono, media adviser to Hamas’ political chief. The delegation is led by Hamas chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. He is currently staying in Qatar.
Discussion topics
Nono said that the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and the challenges facing the Palestinian issue will be discussed in this meeting.
However, no comment has been received from Fatah yet.
Previous discussions and challenges
This will be the first talks between the two sides in months. Earlier, a meeting was held in July in Beijing, the capital of China. There was a discussion about taking steps to form a unity government. However, similar talks held in the past have not yielded any progress so far.
The post-war administration of Gaza has become a critical issue for the Palestinians. Both Hamas and Fatah described it as an internal matter. Also, they rejected the conditions offered by Israel or the United States.
Israel’s position
Israel has declared that it will not accept any role for Hamas in the next administration of Gaza. They are not even willing to trust the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas.
Meanwhile, the unity talks between Hamas and Fatah leaders are expected to play an important role in solving the internal problems of Palestine. This discussion can create an opportunity to establish unity between the two parties.
