Hezbollah finance chief killed, Israel claims
The Israeli military has claimed to have killed the finance chief of the Lebanese Shiite political party and armed group Hezbollah.
The Israeli military made the claim on Monday (October 21). AFP reports.
They say Hezbollah’s last financial commander has been “eliminated” in Syria. However, Israel did not reveal the name of this Hezbollah commander.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement on Monday that the man was the head of Iran-backed Hezbollah’s “Unit 4400”. He was responsible for transferring money to the organization through the sale of Iranian oil.
He said, “This commander was eliminated in Syria a few hours ago.”
Daniel Hagari said that this Hezbollah unit was previously led by Mohammad Jaafar Qaiser. He added that Jaafar was also known as Sheikh Salah.
Daniel Hagari said that Jaafar had been taking care of Hezbollah’s main source of income for years. Israel killed him in an attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut in early October.
Yesterday, the Syrian Defense Ministry said that two people were killed in an Israeli strike in the country. The attack targeted a car.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor in Syria, said that the attack targeted a non-Syrian man. The man was driving at the time of the attack. A memorial service was being held in the area around the attack site for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israel last week.
Hezbollah’s “Unit 4400” transports Iranian oil to Syria, which is then sold to Lebanon. According to Daniel Hagari, the oil is worth millions of dollars.
