Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir and his sons are facing investigation in corruption cases. The head of the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said on Thursday that they are going to start an investigation into a corruption case involving the country’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and his sons.
Mahathir’s businessman sons Mirjan and Mokhzani were issued notices by the country’s anti-corruption commission to declare their assets last January as part of an investigation into offshore financial and business records published by media outlets.
Malaysia’s chief anti-corruption commissioner Azam Baki on Thursday declined to provide details on the investigation against Mahathir or his sons, the country’s Free Malaysia Today reported.
He told television reporters in a comment, let the investigation be completed first. Wait till an appropriate time, when we can publish the outcome of the case.
In recent months, the commission has launched several corruption cases against prominent political figures allied with Mahathir, 98, a longtime foe of current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
But Anwar denied targeting political rivals, saying the investigations were part of the government’s efforts to tackle high-level corruption.
