Canada has now implicated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The country’s newspaper, citing government sources, said that Narendra Modi knew about the conspiracy to kill the leader of the Khalistan movement in Canada in advance.
Although the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail published this news, they said that even though he knew about the incident, the country’s intelligence agencies do not have any evidence that Modi was involved in the assassination conspiracy.
India has dismissed the allegations as ‘ridiculous’. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that such baseless comments should be dismissed with negligence. India said that such ridiculous allegations will further deteriorate bilateral relations.
The Canadian government had earlier alleged that India was directly involved in the murder of Canadian citizen Khalistan movement leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the allegation in Parliament and said that they have enough information to believe that. India should cooperate with the intelligence agencies engaged in the investigation.
However, India has been claiming that the allegation is baseless from the beginning. They have asked the Canadian government to provide evidence in this regard. India claims that Canada has not yet provided any evidence.
Canadian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs David Morrison, while testifying before the parliamentary committee of that country a few days ago, said that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah had a hand in Nijjar’s murder.
Quoting Canadian government sources, The Globe and Mail reported that Amit Shah himself had planned the murder of Nijjar. The plan was informed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
The Globe and Mail report said that the intelligence agencies of that country believe that Shah, Jaishankar and Doval would not take such a decision without informing Modi.
The newspaper, however, said that Canadian intelligence agencies have no evidence that Modi is directly involved in the assassination plot. Canada had alleged that the former Indian High Commissioner was involved in the assassination plot. The High Commissioner was then brought back to India.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the government does not usually comment on media reports. But this news was made by quoting Canadian government sources. This baseless and ridiculous comment should be dismissed with negligence. He said that such an attempt to defame India will further worsen bilateral relations.
India has long been concerned about the behavior of Sikhs living in Canada who are involved in the pro-Khalistan movement. India has been announcing that it will deal with their anti-India activities with a strong hand. But the Trudeau government is not paying attention to it. India alleges that Trudeau is desperate to get the support of Canadian Sikhs in the elections.
The United States had earlier commented that Canada’s statement on Amit Shah was worrying. The United States has alleged that the Indian government also attempted to assassinate pro-Khalistan Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a citizen of that country. Although Canada’s allegations were dismissed, the Indian government did not call the US allegations ridiculous or baseless. Rather, it has formed a high-powered committee to investigate it.
India is cooperating with the US government in the investigation into the Pannun assassination attempt case. The US claims that Vikas Yadav, a government intelligence member at the time, is involved in the conspiracy to assassinate Pannun.
India has said that Vikas is no longer a government employee. An Indian named Nikhil Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in connection with the Pannun assassination plot. He was later taken to the United States.
Vikas Yadav has been arrested in India on charges of kidnapping a businessman. Some believe that this was done to prevent extradition to the United States. According to the agreement, no one can be sent abroad for trial if he has not completed his sentence for a crime committed in the country.
