Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apologized to the Israelis in the face of massive protests. The failure to recover the bodies of six Palestinian hostages from the Gaza Strip sparked protests across Israel. This incident increased the pressure on his government.

Last Saturday, Israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages from a tunnel in the Rafah area of southern Gaza. One of them was also a dual citizen of the United States. After this incident, protests spread across the country and the main trade union, the Histradrot, went on a nationwide strike. As a result, several important cities, including Tel Aviv, were practically paralyzed.

The main reason for the protests is the failure of the Israeli government to demand an immediate deal for the release of the hostages. Despite Netanyahu’s apology for this failure, national and international pressure on him continues to mount.

US President Joe Biden has called a meeting on a quick cease-fire and a hostage release, and the UK has suspended some arms sales to Israel.

The Israeli military says Hamas is still holding 97 hostages in Gaza, and Israeli discontent is growing over the situation.
