Israeli airstrikes on the international airport in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, have killed six people, including a senior official, according to media outlets controlled by the Houthi rebels. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) was at the airport during the attack. He said that although he was unharmed, one of their crew members was injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of continued attacks on Yemen. And the UN Secretary-General has expressed concern over Israel’s increasing tensions with the Houthi rebels.

The Houthi rebels are part of Iran’s “axis of resistance” in the Middle East. In addition to the airport in Sanaa, which they control, Israel carried out airstrikes on various military installations and power plants on Thursday.

After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu warned that Israel would continue the attacks until the job is done.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was present at Sanaa International Airport at the time of the attack, and the Israeli forces did not respond to AFP’s request for comment on whether they were aware of the incident.

Netanyahu said they were determined to cut off the “terrorist wing” (Houthi rebels) from Iran’s “axis of evil.”

Netanyahu added, “We have ordered our troops to destroy Houthi infrastructure. Because we will strike back with full force against anyone who tries to harm us.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the escalation of tensions between Israel and the Houthi rebels, saying yesterday that the attack on Sanaa airport was “of particular concern”.

We have ordered our troops to destroy Houthi infrastructure. Because we will respond with full force to those who try to harm us.

In a post on social media after the Israeli attack, the WHO chief said that one of the crew of their aircraft was injured in the attack. At least two people were reported to have been killed at the airport. He added that other UN staff stationed at the airport are also safe. However, their flight has been delayed.

The WHO chief went to Yemen to release the UN staff. Another objective was to assess the health and humanitarian situation in the war-torn country. He said in X that their work was completed yesterday. Then they were about to board the plane from the airport when the attack occurred. It damaged the airport’s air traffic control tower, runway and some infrastructure.

An eyewitness told AFP that about six attacks were carried out on Sanaa International Airport. The attacks also targeted the neighboring Al-Dailami Air Base.

The Houthi-controlled Al-Mashirah TV station reported that Israeli forces also attacked a power plant in the Hodeidah area. Six people were killed in yesterday’s attacks. Earlier, the Houthi rebels had said in a statement that three people had been killed.

Earlier last week, the Houthi rebels claimed to have launched a hypersonic missile attack on Israel. They said the attack was in response to Israel’s massacre in Gaza. They have also announced that they will continue such attacks on the country until Israel stops its war in Gaza. At least 12 Israelis were injured in that attack. The missile hit a park in Tel Aviv. Israel failed to shoot it down.

Since that incident, Israel has been carrying out a series of attacks targeting Yemen.
