White House spokesman John Kirby claimed on Friday that North Korean forces fighting Russian troops in Ukraine are suffering significant casualties. Kirby claimed that more than 1,000 have been killed or wounded in the past week alone.

The Anadolu Agency reported this in a report on Friday (December 27).

Speaking to reporters, Kirby gave a detailed account of the situation in the Kursk region, where North Korean troops have taken positions against Ukraine.

Kirby said, “We assess that the losses for North Korean forces have been heavy, with more than 1,000 reported casualties in just one week.”

He added that it is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are considering these troops expendable and are ordering a hopeless attack against Ukraine’s defenses.

US spokesman Kirby said President Joe Biden could soon approve another additional security assistance package for Kiev to support Ukraine’s efforts.

Historically, North Korea has been a known ally of Russia and has provided indirect support to Moscow in various ways, including by providing weapons or military supplies. The direct deployment of North Korean troops in Ukraine is seen as a significant factor in the escalation of the conflict.

If this claim is true, it would be important to verify the details from reliable sources, as North Korea’s involvement in Ukraine could have broader geopolitical implications, particularly for relations between North Korea, Russia and the West.

If North Korea suffers heavy losses, Kim Jong-un’s government could be forced to take action to either minimize the damage or avoid further casualties in Ukraine.
