European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, “Recognizing a Palestinian state is not a gift to Hamas, but the opposite.” Strengthening the Palestinian Authority does not mean strengthening Hamas but quite the opposite. Our mission is to strengthen the segment of Palestinian society that we recognize and work with.

He said these things in an interview with journalists in Spain on Friday. Referring to the European Union’s negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, he said that whenever someone decided to support the Palestinian state, Israel called him anti-Semitic.

Ireland, Norway and Spain said on Wednesday (May 22) they would recognize a Palestinian state on May 28 to end Israeli aggression in Gaza following the October 7 attack by Hamas. Besides, these countries will revive the peace talks that stopped a decade ago.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gaard Storr said, “If (the State of Palestine) is not recognized, there will never be peace in the Middle East.”
