Heavy rains in the Indian capital Delhi caused waterlogging in various places. As a result, public life has been disrupted since Wednesday. During this time, at least nine people died in various rain-related incidents.

According to data provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi received 100 mm of rain from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning. In the last 14 years, Delhi has not received this amount of rain in just 24 hours, according to the country’s media Anandbazar Patrika.

India’s capital is also likely to experience heavy rain with thunder on Thursday, according to the country’s weather service. They said that this situation may continue till Monday. In this situation, IMD has issued a red alert across Delhi.

They have advised the residents of the city not to go out unless there is a special need. On Wednesday night, the Delhi government’s education minister announced the closure of all schools in the capital region on August 1.

Meanwhile, as a result of heavy rains, commuters have reported massive traffic jams in Delhi as well as on the Delhi-Noida Expressway. Commuters complained of being stuck on the road for more than one and a half hours due to heavy rain on the capital’s Mehrauli-Chhattarpur road. Long queues of vehicles were seen on the DND flyover from Uttar Pradesh’s Noida to Delhi’s Moolchand.

According to Indian media NDTV, a 22-year-old woman named Tanuja and her three-year-old son died after slipping into a submerged sewer in Gazipur’s Khoda Colony. A 28-year-old man died after being electrocuted in front of his house in Mithapur.

Several underpasses in Noida have been submerged due to heavy rains overnight. Two people died when a wall collapsed here. Three people died after power lines snapped on water-logged roads at IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram.

Due to the heavy rains that have been going on for several days, the residents of Delhi are suffering in various ways. Last Saturday, three students drowned in a coaching center in the basement of a building in the city. Since that incident, ordinary students have protested about it.

The weather also disrupted air traffic, with at least 10 Delhi-bound flights being diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow. Airlines have warned of further possible flight disruptions due to the weather.
