A dozen Syrian army soldiers were killed in an attack led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group in the city of Aleppo. Russia then targeted the group in the city. The country claims that more than 300 rebels were killed in their attack.

According to a report by Tasnim News, the leader of the rebel group, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, was also killed in a Russian airstrike. The Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported that al-Julani was reportedly inside the building targeted in the airstrike, although his death has not yet been confirmed.

Rebel forces captured parts of Aleppo and several surrounding towns on Saturday.

The rebels have captured key areas including Aleppo airport. They now also control the city of Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province. The Syrian Civil Defense said four civilians were killed and six wounded in Syrian and Russian airstrikes in rebel-held Idlib.

The stalemate in Syria’s civil war has heated up again. The battlefield has been largely stable since 2020.
