Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti and Head of the Council of Senior Scholars Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh passed away in Riyadh this morning (23 September), reports Saudi Gazette, citing a statement from the Royal Court.
He was 82.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has ordered that funeral prayers in absentia also be performed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and in all mosques across the Kingdom.
The King and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman have offered their condolences to his family, the Saudi people, and the Islamic world.
“With the passing of Al-Sheikh, Saudi Arabia and the Islamic world have lost a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the service of Islam and Muslims,” the Royal Court said in the statement.
Sheikh Al-Sheikh, who served as the head of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, and the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League, was a world renowned Islamic scholar. In June 1999, King Fahd appointed Al-Sheikh as Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia as successor of Sheikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz.
