Thailand’s new Prime Minister Petang Tarn was sworn in

Petang Tarn Shinawatra sworn in as Prime Minister of Thailand. He was sworn in as the country’s prime minister on Sunday (August 18) after the royal signature approving him for the post.

According to the news media Reuters, the secretary of the representative council Apat Sukhanand read the appointment letter given by the king at the ceremony held in the capital, Bangkok. As part of the ceremony, Petangtarn paid his respects by kneeling in front of the King’s portrait. Then he said, as the head of the executive department, I will try to fulfill my duties with an open mind with other legislators. We will work to move the country forward on the basis of consensus.

Petangtarn’s father Thaksin Shinawatra (75) was also present at the event. She was next to Petangtarn’s husband in the front row at the venue.

Thailand’s King Patongtarn Shinawatra has been approved as the country’s new prime minister two days after parliament was elected. Then 37-year-old Petangtarn was sworn in as Thailand’s youngest prime minister on Sunday. Earlier, Petang Tarn’s cousin Yingluck Shinawatra served as the first female Prime Minister of Thailand.

Last Wednesday, the country’s Constitutional Court deposed Sretha Thavisin as the Prime Minister of Thailand. It was also ordered to dissolve his cabinet. Sretha was accused of appointing Pichit Chuenban, a lawyer convicted of corruption, as minister. Both Sretha and Petangtarn are members of Phew Thai Party.

All those elected as prime ministers from Petangtarn’s family were ousted by the coup.
