Tashiyuki Mimaki, vice president of Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization that won the Nobel Peace Prize, commented that the current situation in Gaza is similar to Japan after World War II. He said this while receiving the award on Friday.
According to a report by Reuters and The Telegraph in this regard, Nihon Hidankyo received the Nobel Prize this year in recognition of his initiative and campaign to build a world free of nuclear weapons. The organization has formed an anti-nuclear movement with survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
A tearful Mimaki spoke about Gaza while accepting the award on Friday. “Look at Gaza,” he said. The parents are holding the bloody body of the child. It’s like Japan 80 years ago. The children of Hiroshima-Nagasaki lost their fathers in the war, their mothers in the bombings’.
Mimaki, who survived the atomic bomb, also warned the world about the possible use of the atomic bomb. He said, ‘It is also said that the world is at peace because of the nuclear bomb. But terrorists can also use nuclear bombs. For example, Russia can use it in Ukraine, Israel can use it in Gaza.
The Geneva-based human rights organization Euro-Med said in a report released last April that Israel had dropped more than 70,000 tons of explosives in the Gaza Strip.
According to the US Department of Energy, the United States dropped a total of 36,000 tons of explosives on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.
About 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki, and another 214,000 died later in those two cities from diseases caused by the side effects of the bombs.
According to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, 2,37,000 died in Hiroshima and 1,35,000 in Nagasaki, counting hospital data on diseases caused by the bomb. Most of them were civilians.
Meanwhile, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 100,000 injured in the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza for the past year. Most of them are women and children. In addition, nearly two million Palestinians have been displaced.
