Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Haniyeh mourned the killing in a statement, saying Israel killed the “great man” because they “fear and hate everything about him”.
Mahathir, who served as Malaysia’s prime minister for 24 years from 1981 to 2020, described Hania as a “soft-spoken man, but with the heart of a lion”.
Mahathir said his courage to stand up for his people clearly stems from a clear conscience and guided by a moral compass based on humanity and religious beliefs. They can kill Haniyah but not his ideology.
Incidentally, Ismail Haniya, head of the Palestinian armed organization Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran on Wednesday morning.
