After China, the number of patients infected with the human metapneumovirus or HMPV virus is increasing in Malaysia. The Malaysian Ministry of Health has advised the public to use masks and wash their hands frequently with soap as a preventive measure.
After the 2020 Corona epidemic, a new virus infection has appeared in China. This is increasing the crowd of patients in hospitals. The effect of this virus is especially visible in children.
After China, this virus has also been transmitted in Malaysia. The country’s Ministry of Health has advised people to be aware, according to the news outlet The Economic Times.
The virus has been identified as human metapneumovirus or HMPV. This virus usually causes cold-like symptoms. The virus becomes more active during the winter season. Currently, concerns are growing about its rapid spread in various provinces in China.
China’s health department warned a few days ago about the increase in the rate of flu-like diseases. But since no official announcement has been made about the current situation, many fear that information is being withheld.
Health experts fear that if the infection spreads, it could create a bigger crisis.
What is HMPV and why is it a concern in China?
According to the CDC, HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract. It affects people of all ages. However, the virus is most dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
HMPV was first identified in 2001.
What are the symptoms of HMPV?
The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of the flu and other respiratory infections. Common symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the virus can cause complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
The incubation period for HMPV is usually three to six days. However, symptoms can last for different lengths of time, depending on the severity of the infection.
How is it spread?
HMPV is spread in the same way as other respiratory viruses. Which includes-
1. Discharge from coughing and sneezing.
2. Shaking hands or touching.
3. Touching an infected area and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.
