Turkey has called on the international community to lift all sanctions against Syria. The Turkish Foreign Minister made the call after meeting with Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Shara in Damascus on Sunday (December 22).

Al Jazeera reported that Syrian de facto leader Ahmed al-Shara welcomed Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in the capital Damascus on Sunday. The two leaders also held meetings on various issues.

Later, at a press conference, Ahmed al-Shara, alias Abu Mohammad Jolani, announced the name of the country’s interim government’s interior minister. At the same time, he said that all weapons in Syria, including those held by Kurdish rebels, would remain under the control of the state.

Stating that the security of minorities in the country would be ensured, Shara added that rebel fighters would join the army in the future.

At the press conference, the Turkish Foreign Minister called on the world community to lift all sanctions on Syria. He also called on everyone to come forward to rebuild Syria. At the time, he warned the Kurdish rebels that the group would have no place in Syria in the future.

Meanwhile, a UN delegation is working with the country’s new administration to investigate the crimes committed during the Assad government’s rule in Syria over the past 14 years. They will examine various data, including prisons and mass graves.

Earlier, a US State Department delegation met with Abu Muhammad al-Jolani on December 20. The two sides discussed the political transformation of Syria.

After the meeting, Barbara Leaf, a top US State Department official, said in a statement that their talks with Ahmed al-Shara, the head of Tahrir al-Sham, went well.

The US representatives emphasized that no group in the country could become a threat to Syria and the outside world. In addition, Barbara said that the US had lifted the $10 million reward announced on al-Shara’s head.
