What Russia said about sheltering Bashar and his family
Russia has sheltered former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the decision was made on the orders of President Vladimir Putin.
At a press briefing on Monday, Peskov said, “It is not possible to make such an important decision without the president’s (Putin) decision. This is his decision.”
However, the Kremlin spokesman also noted that no official statement has been made on the matter.
At the same time, referring to information published in the media, Peskov said, “I have nothing more to add on this.”
Fall of the Assad regime
On November 27, armed rebels in Syria launched a massive attack on government positions. In a series of these attacks, they captured the important provinces of Idlib, Aleppo and Homs within a few days. At one point, on December 8, the rebels entered the capital Damascus and the Assad administration withdrew its troops.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, President Bashar al-Assad has resigned from power and ordered a peaceful transfer of power in Syria.
Assad’s asylum in Russia
A Russian source said that Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were granted asylum on humanitarian grounds.
President Putin’s decision is a testament to the positive role of Russia, Assad’s long-time ally, and a reflection of Moscow’s deep interest in political stability in the Middle East.
