Police have arrested 22 people for celebrating the birthday of Myanmar’s ousted pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. They were arrested in Mandalay, the country’s second largest city, after posting photos of Suu Kyi wearing flowers in her hair on her birthday on Wednesday.

The country’s media outlet Eleven Media reported this news citing an unnamed official, according to AFP.

Another local media reported that several people were arrested in the city in central Myanmar for wearing flowers in their hair or praying in public.

It is also claimed that the persons were arrested after posting several pictures from a Telegram account known to be pro-junta. The BBC could not independently verify the authenticity of the post.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi always wears flowers in her hair. He has been imprisoned by the country’s junta for more than three years. In February 2021, the army seized power in Myanmar, overthrowing the elected government of Suu Kyi’s party.

Wednesday was Suu Kyi’s 79th birthday. He is very sick now due to various physical complications.
