Five soldiers were killed in a ‘terrorist’ attack on an army post in central Iraq’s Salaheddin province. Among the dead were an army officer and four other army personnel. AFP reported this information in a report on Tuesday.

A security source said Daesh (Islamic State group) terrorists attacked an army post in Matebiza village, killing “four soldiers and a regiment commander”.

However, Iraq’s defense ministry said an officer and several members of his regiment were killed “while thwarting the terrorist attack”.

Incidentally, IS emerged in Syria and Iraq in 2014. At that time, this international extremist group declared itself a separate state by occupying the vast territory of the two countries. However, in 2017, Iraqi forces backed by the US-led military coalition defeated IS in Iraq.

Then in 2019, the terrorist group lost its last territory in Syria to the US-backed Kurdish forces. However, some remaining groups of IS still continue their activities. They often carry out deadly attacks especially from remote areas and desert hideouts.
