Typhoon Trami, which hit the northeastern coast of the Philippines, killed 26 people on Thursday. More than 150,000 people have now been displaced by the storm.

The typhoon, locally known as Christine, is known as Trami in other countries. Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding and landslides on the main island of Luzon in the Philippines. Deutsche Welle reports

The storm, which is moving west at speeds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, is now moving west. It is expected to hit the South China Sea and the Cordillera mountain range in the north of the country, the country’s meteorological department said in a morning bulletin.

Authorities have already warned of more rain, flooding, landslides and storm surges in the northern Philippines, especially in the northern provinces of the country.

So far, 26 people have been reported dead. Most of the deaths were caused by drowning and flooding in the Bicol region. Naga city reported 14 deaths on Thursday.

Trami also reached the town of Divilacan in the northeastern state of Isabela, but there were no reports of casualties, said the city’s disaster management chief, Ezequiel Chavez.

The government has ordered the closure of schools, colleges and other businesses due to fears of more rain and flooding.

About 163,000 people are currently displaced and sheltering in various relief camps. Most of the camps are in the Bicol region, where residents are forced to evacuate when water rises to the roofs of single-story buildings.

The Philippine National Aviation Authority said dozens of flights were canceled nationwide due to the storm.

The central bank of the Philippines was also forced to suspend its foreign exchange trading for two days.
