Delhi temperature exceeds 47 degrees, ‘red alert’ issued

The temperature reached 47.8 degrees in most of the regions, including the capital of India, New Delhi. In such a situation, the state government of Delhi has issued a five-day ‘red alert’. The period of this red alert has started from Monday.
A temperature of 47.8 degree Celsius was recorded in Delhi’s Najafgarh district last Sunday (May 19).

This is the highest temperature in the country this season. The Indian Meteorological Department has said that the heatwave may continue this week as well.

Electricity demand has already reached its peak in Delhi due to the severe heat wave. The schools which have not yet announced the summer vacation, the state government of Delhi issued a red alert on Monday and ordered those schools to immediately announce the vacation.

The temperature in Delhi usually hovers around 40 degrees or above during summer. But the heat that has fallen this summer is not normal, said New Delhi Meteorological Department (IMD) officials. Especially the temperature has increased every day in the last four days in the Indian capital and its surrounding areas.

According to the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, heat wave will continue in Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana for the next five days.

Heat wave will continue in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for the next four days. Heat wave is forecast in West Bengal on May 18 and 20. For Odisha it is 20th and 21st. Heat wave forecast in Jharkhand is on May 19 and 20.

The Indian Meteorological Department also said that the country may be hit by longer and more intense heat waves this year.

Temperatures crossed 45 degrees Celsius in 10 regions of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday. Apart from the capital Delhi, it includes various districts of neighboring Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature in Delhi and other northern cities may touch 45-46 degree Celsius on Monday and Tuesday. Apart from this, the IMD has predicted the onset of a new heat wave in some parts of western and central India in the next few days. Meanwhile, the general election is being held in India amidst intense heat wave. Election results will be announced on June 4.
