India does not support any statement of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled after being ousted from power in the face of mass student and public agitation, said the country’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri.
This information was reported by the Indian media The Hindu in a report on Thursday (December 12).
In addition, Vikram Mishri also said that India’s relations with Bangladesh are not limited to a single political party or government.
According to the report, Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri said in a briefing of the Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs led by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday – India does not support the criticism of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina against the interim government of Bangladesh and this (Hasina’s statement) is a very small or insignificant issue in Bangladesh-India relations.
He said that India’s relations with Bangladesh are not limited to a single political party or government and India is focused on the people of Bangladesh.
Sheikh Hasina, who was in power for a long time with the support of India, was ousted from power in a mass uprising in August this year. After that, she fled to India. Since then, relations between Bangladesh and India have been strained.
Meanwhile, the International Criminal Tribunal has issued an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina on charges of genocide committed during the anti-discrimination student movement in July and August. However, despite this, Hasina continues to carry out political activities from India and keeps making various hateful statements against the country and the government.
In such a situation, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently visited Bangladesh for talks. Two days after returning from his visit to Dhaka, he briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the country’s Ministry of External Affairs about the meeting with the top officials of the Bangladesh interim government, including Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The briefing, which lasted for more than two and a half hours at the Annex Building of the Parliament House in New Delhi on Wednesday, was attended by 21 to 22 members of parliament.
There, Vikram Misri said that Sheikh Hasina has been making these statements and statements using her personal communication device and the Indian government is not providing her with any platform or facility that would allow her to carry out her political activities from Indian soil.
He claimed that this is part of India’s traditional practice of avoiding interference in other countries.
According to The Hindu report, such comments by Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri are quite significant, as Hasina has been giving various video messages criticizing the interim government led by Bangladesh’s chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Mishri also told the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs that during his visit to Dhaka on Monday, he had told the interim government that India’s relations with Bangladesh go beyond any particular political party or a particular government and that India prioritizes relations with the people of Bangladesh and will continue to engage with the current government.
He referred to Bangladesh as India’s largest trade and communication partner in South Asia and said that in recent years, the two sides have built rail connectivity, bus connectivity, inland waterways. However, he told the committee that passenger rail services between the two countries remain suspended.
