The Latin American country of Brazil sent back a Palestinian family at the request of the United States. The move comes after the US alerted Brazil’s federal police about the family’s travel.

Brazilian police sources said Abu Umar was detained last Friday (June 21) when he entered Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos airport with his pregnant wife, son and mother-in-law. Two days later they were flown back to Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

A senior federal police official said, “The request came from the US State Department. It was proved before a judge that Abu Umar was deeply involved with Hamas.

According to media reports, Brazil’s federal police received a tip from the US embassy that Hamas fighter Abu Omar would arrive in Brazil from Kuala Lumpur.

According to the petition by Bruno Henrique de Moura, Abu Umar’s lawyer, the Palestinian family was detained by police without a warrant at Guarulhos airport. They went there to meet his brother who lives in Brazil.

However, Brazilian police sources said that Abu Omar did not go to visit, but to stay in Brazil and become a spokesman for Hamas. He took a huge amount of luggage with his family.

Media reports claim Abu Omar, 37, is the executive director of the Asia Middle East Center. His wife is Malaysian.
