The Chinese government has strongly criticized the recent US military aid and arms sales to Taiwan.
Beijing warned on Sunday that supporting and supplying arms to Taiwan is like ‘playing with fire’ and its consequences could be harmful to the United States.
Earlier on Friday, the White House approved $571.3 million in military aid and $295 million worth of arms sales to Taiwan. Earlier this month, the United States approved $385 million worth of arms sales.
China’s response
According to a report by the Global Times, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the United States is violating the ‘one-China policy’ and three China-US joint statements.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said, ‘Helping Taiwan achieve independence by providing arms is like playing with fire and the United States will get burned.’
The country’s Foreign Ministry also said, ‘Using the Taiwan issue as a tool to contain China is bound to fail.’
At the same time, Beijing has called on Washington to immediately stop supplying arms.
The country has complained that such US actions are disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
A Chinese spokesman said, “We will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.”
Taiwan-US military relations
China sees military aid to Taiwan as a threat to its sovereignty. On the other hand, the United States argues in favor of strengthening Taiwan’s defense capabilities.
Tensions between China and the United States over the Taiwan issue are increasing. Analysts believe that the growing US military presence in the Taiwan Strait and arms sales could further complicate the situation in the region.
