China’s strange custom of ‘ghost marriage’

Socially and religiously the oldest practice is marriage. A man and a woman live together through this age-old practice. But in China there is a strange custom about this marriage. Where marriage is given to a deceased person. Basically the dead person also needs a companion – this tradition is being celebrated in the country. The practice of ghost marriage was introduced in the period BC (221-207) i.e. 3000 years ago. Some older Chinese still believe that if people die without fulfilling their wishes, they will not rest in peace and will come back to haunt the living. That is, if one of the dead is unmarried, his soul will not find peace. The practice is most prevalent in the country’s northern China, Shaanxi, Shandong and Hebei provinces. In these regions two types of ghosts are usually married. The first custom includes couples who died before or after the engagement. Originally their marriage dream was unfulfilled, the relatives organized a wedding ceremony and buried them together.

Another scenario involves people who are not married. Don’t know each other in life. But posthumous matches are made through matchmakers. However, the second marriage held a fairly brisk business. Because those who search for dead brides and grooms earn 150,000 yuan as remuneration.
