US President Donald Trump has called for the third time for displaced Palestinians to be given shelter in Egypt and Jordan.
Trump said in the Oval Office on Friday (January 31), “I’ve heard some say they won’t do it, but I think they will. I’m confident they will.”
Trump claimed that Egypt and Jordan would shelter displaced Palestinians despite repeated refusals.
Asked whether he was considering taking any steps to pressure Cairo and Amman to accept his offer, the US president said, “They will shelter the Palestinians. They will do it, okay? We do a lot for them and they will do it.”
Last Thursday, Trump also called for the Palestinians to leave Gaza. He said the Palestinians should leave Gaza.
After a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19, Trump announced plans to evacuate Gaza on January 25. Speaking to reporters, Trump said Jordan and Egypt should take responsibility for more Palestinians in the devastated Gaza.
Asked by reporters whether this was a temporary or long-term solution, Trump said either would be possible.
However, both Egypt and Jordan have rejected Trump’s proposal. Hamas has also strongly condemned Trump’s proposal. Analysts have called Trump’s proposal ‘ethnic cleansing’ and a ‘war crime’. In addition, other Arab countries and European countries such as France have rejected Trump’s proposal.
Meanwhile, Egyptians gathered at the Rafah border on Friday to strongly protest Trump’s proposal. They claim that they have full sympathy for the people of Gaza. Therefore, they are not in favor of forcibly sheltering refugees. They even called the move ‘unjust’.
