Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Mecca received heavy rain on Thursday local time. Flash floods occurred in Makkah and surrounding areas due to the rain.
A few videos that went viral on social media highlighted the intensity of the rain. Dust storms occur in those areas before the rains. This reduces the visibility in various places.
Saudi National Meteorological Center warned of heavy to very heavy rain in their forecast. Floods and hailstorms were especially predicted in Makkah, Jizan, Asir, Al Baha and Madinah.
After Thursday’s heavy rain, flash floods occurred in the low-lying areas and valleys of Makkah.
Like the whole world, the Middle East is also witnessing adverse weather conditions. Abnormal rainfall is being observed in different parts of the region. While desert regions receive less rainfall, those areas receive comparatively more rainfall. Among them, the Sahara desert in the African country of Morocco has seen floods for the first time in the last 50 years. Flooding in the Sahara is a rare occurrence.
