Record rainfall in Japan

Thousands of people have been evacuated due to record rainfall in parts of northern Japan. The floods caused by the heavy rains caused the river to overflow and various bridges and cars were washed away.

At least one person has died and four people are still missing after heavy rain hit the Yamagata and Akita regions of Japan’s Honshu island.

A 60-year-old man was buried under the ground in a landslide during road work in the city of Yuzawa, police told AFP news agency. Meanwhile, another 86-year-old man is missing. He was last seen by a river in the city of Akita.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said two areas in the Yamagata region recorded the heaviest 24-hour rainfall since 1976. 389 millimeters (15 in) of rain was recorded in Shinzo and 289 millimeters (289 mm) in Sakata.

In the video footage, several vehicles, including a police car, were also seen washed away by the flood waters. Authorities have advised the evacuation of more than 200,000 people, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
