Floods and landslides have killed 10 people on Indonesia’s Java island. Two more are missing. Rescue workers are searching for missing people, the country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.
Heavy rains last week triggered landslides and flooding in West Java’s Sukabumi district, severely damaging hilly villages. The heavy rains have caused several rivers to overflow their banks and enter localities.
More than 170 villages have been affected by the floods, with more than 3,000 people evacuated. Several bridges, roads and houses in the area have been destroyed.
Yudi Haryanto, head of a rescue command post in Sukabumi, said rescuers had recovered at least 10 bodies, including three children, from the villages of Tegalbuled, Simpenan and Chiemas.
Videos circulating on social media showed roads turned into rivers of mud and trees uprooted by floodwaters.
Heavy rains in Indonesia often cause floods and landslides between October and March. Last month, heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods in North Sumatra province, killing 20 people and leaving two missing. In addition, nine people were killed when a landslide in the same region killed a tourist bus.
