South Korea is in a political crisis. President Yoon Suk-yeol suddenly declared martial law last week. But the martial law did not last long in the country due to opposition from lawmakers. He has already faced a round of impeachment attempts. However, Yoon attacked his political opponents in harsh language on Thursday and vowed to fight to the end.
In a televised speech on Thursday, Yoon said that the attempt to save democracy from collapsing and confront the opposition’s “parliamentary dictatorship” was a legal decision. He reiterated that he would not resign.
Yoon also said today, “I will remain steadfast, no matter what investigation or impeachment is brought against me. I will fight to the end.” However, Yoon had previously apologized to the nation for imposing martial law.
South Korea fell into political turmoil after President Yoon declared martial law late on December 3. However, within hours of that day, 190 lawmakers rushed into parliament and voted to lift martial law.
Incidentally, Yun had declared martial law citing anti-state forces and the threat of North Korea. However, it soon became clear that he had taken this step not because of any external threat but because of his own internal political problems.
