Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. Rather, it is a freedom-loving organization, which is struggling to protect its land.

Erdogan said this in an interview with American media NBC News on Tuesday local time.

“I have never called Hamas a terrorist organization and I do not see them as a terrorist organization,” he said.

The Turkish president emphasized, “Hamas is a freedom-seeking, resistance organization that is struggling to defend its land.” So how can I call such a group a terrorist organisation?’

At that time, when an NBC journalist asked how he saw Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, Erdogan said, “You have to find out the reasons behind this incident.” If we look back, we will see how many Palestinians were killed in the Israeli aggression that was already going on and how bad the situation was.

Türkiye has long supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These include proposals to establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Meanwhile, in the wake of Erdogan’s comments, the international community has seen mixed reactions. Specifically, the United States and Israel designate Hamas as a terrorist organization. However, Erdoğan insists that Israel’s continuous attacks and occupation of Palestinian lands are the real cause of the conflict.

Incidentally, 24 Palestinians were killed and 60 wounded in the last 24 hours in the Israeli attack on Gaza. With this, the number of people killed in the Israeli attack since October 7 has reached 41 thousand 431 people. And the number of injured has reached 95 thousand 818.

Gaza’s health ministry said most of the casualties were women and children. Sources: Anadolu Agency and Al-Jazeera
