3 Israeli soldiers were killed in a Hamas rocket attack from inside the Gaza Strip. Several others were injured in this incident. BBC reported this information in a report on Monday.
The al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said it attacked the Kerem Shalom crossing and targeted Israeli forces with short-range rockets.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said 10 missiles were fired from an area near Gaza’s Rafah crossing, about 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) south of Kerem Shalom.
The IDF also said the rockets were fired from a facility located about 350 meters from a civilian shelter. But later they destroyed the launcher and a nearby military installation.
The Israeli occupation of Gaza has been going on for seven months and has created an acute humanitarian crisis. The crossing is one of the few routes used to deliver humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, to the helpless and vulnerable people of Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, Egyptian mediators held two days of talks aimed at securing an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of prisoners held by Hamas. In a statement, Hamas said the latest round of talks concluded on Sunday and its delegation will now travel from Cairo to Qatar to consult with the Hamas leadership.
US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) chief William Barnes was involved in the mediation effort and is now reported to have left the Egyptian capital for talks in Doha.
The cease-fire agreement would stop fighting for 40 days and exchange prisoners held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. Hamas said it viewed the current proposal in a “positive light”, but the key point was whether the ceasefire agreement would be permanent or temporary.
