Huge victory for the opposition in the elections in South Korea
The liberal opposition Democratic Party-DPK has won an absolute majority in South Korea’s parliamentary elections. They defeated the ruling People Power Party-PPP by a huge margin.
Media BBC reported that a few small opposition parties had formed an alliance with DPK in this election. They jointly won 192 out of 300 seats in the National Assembly.
This year’s general election is seen as a referendum on South Korean President Yoon Suk Yul. He has been the president of the country for three years.
The country’s Prime Minister Han Duk-su has already resigned after losing the election. One of the leaders of the party, Han Dong-hoon, and several other senior officials also resigned.
It was a disastrous defeat for President Yun and his party, the People Power Party (PPP). Because, they are trying to pass various laws in the majority legislature. But with this victory of DPI, the party will quickly pass their desired laws.
Both the DPK and the ruling PPP, which won the parliamentary elections, tried to woo smaller parties to shore up support for themselves. They have released some seats to these parties.
Lee Jae-Miang, the leader of the DPK, said, “This is not just a victory for the Democratic Party, it is a great victory for the people.” Politicians of both parties must now use their energies to overcome the ongoing economic crisis. The Democratic Party will lead the way in finding solutions to improve people’s quality of life.
Today’s results can encourage Lee Je-Miang. Because he lost the 2022 presidential election to Yun by a narrow margin. Now there can be a new presidential election.
Current President Yoon is under pressure on multiple issues. These include food price hikes, an aging population and ongoing strikes by doctors.
He went to a shopping mall in Seoul last month. There, seeing the price of 875 Won ($0.65) for a bunch of onions, he was criticized for being ‘reasonable’.
The opposition DPK later used his comments as an election issue. Onion sprouts are displayed in farmers’ gatherings organized by them.
