The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has said that the two countries’ national security advisers have met to discuss holding acceptable elections in Bangladesh as soon as possible and how the US and India can cooperate in those elections.
He made this information during a discussion with journalists at the American Center in Kolkata on Saturday. According to The Telegraph.
Eric Garcetti said at the discussion that there was a meeting between US National Security Advisor Jack Sullivan and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on January 6 and a large part of that meeting was devoted to Bangladesh and its possible elections.
He said, “I was present at that meeting myself. I also participated in the discussions. The main topic of our discussion on the Bangladesh issue was the elections. The main discussion was on how Bangladesh can hold an acceptable election in the shortest possible time and how the US and India can support Bangladesh in this regard.’
In addition, the issue of security of minorities in Bangladesh was also on the agenda, the ambassador said, ‘Both the outgoing President Joe Biden and the next President Donald Trump have emphasized the rights and security of minorities in Bangladesh. In fact, we all want to see Bangladesh as a stable, development-oriented and tolerant country.’
Meanwhile, at a press briefing in Washington on Friday, Jack Sullivan said that the rumors that the US is ‘moving the torch’ in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government are completely ‘absurd’ and the Indian government also does not believe these rumors.
