The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of Tripura, India, was attacked. The Bangladesh flag was also set on fire at the time. Through this, India violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961.

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry gave this reaction in a press release on Monday night. It mentioned the violation of the convention.

The release said that the Bangladesh government is deeply angered by the violent protests and attacks on the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission by the Hindu Sangram Samiti protesters in Agartala on Monday.

It also said that the information received conclusively proves that the protesters entered the premises by breaking the main gate of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in a pre-planned manner. At that time, in the presence of members of the local law enforcement agencies, they vandalized the flagpole, insulted the national flag of Bangladesh and also damaged the property inside the Assistant High Commission. Unfortunately, the local police personnel who were responsible for guarding the High Commission premises did not play an active role in controlling the situation from the beginning. All the members of the Assistant High Commission are suffering from insecurity.

The Bangladesh government would also like to inform that this heinous attack on a diplomatic mission of Bangladesh and the disrespect of the national flag of Bangladesh have come in a pattern, with similar violent protests taking place in Kolkata on November 28.

It also said that since it is the responsibility of the government of that country to protect diplomatic missions from any kind of intrusion or damage, the Bangladesh government calls on the Indian government to take action in this incident and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. India calls on India to ensure the safety of Bangladeshi diplomats and non-diplomatic members and their family members and prevent any violence in diplomatic missions.

Incidentally, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations was signed in Vienna, Austria, in 1961, at the initiative of the United Nations, with the participation of various countries, regarding the conduct of diplomats. It has a total of 53 articles or clauses.

The purpose of this agreement was to develop friendly relations between different countries by following some rules and principles. At that time, independent countries signed the agreement. Later, step by step, countries that became independent also included themselves in this agreement.

Bangladesh signed this agreement in 1978 after its independence. Article 12 of this agreement states that the receiving country must provide security for the diplomatic mission. And the government of the receiving country cannot enter the office area of the mission without the permission of the head of the foreign diplomatic mission.
