Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS, an alliance of emerging economies. Brazil, the current president of the alliance, said that Indonesia is being officially made a full member of BRICS to increase the power of emerging economies and protect the interests of the ‘Global South’ (developing countries in the global south).
The news agency Reuters reported this in a report on Tuesday (January 7).
Indonesia’s inclusion in BRICS further expands the scope of the alliance. In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the alliance also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
Brazil said in a statement on Monday that BRICS member countries unanimously approved the inclusion of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, in the alliance. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry welcomed Brazil’s announcement on Tuesday.
The ministry described BRICS membership as a strategic way to enhance cooperation and partnership with other developing countries.
Reuters reported that the initiative to further expand the BRICS alliance with Indonesia was initially approved at the summit held in Johannesburg in 2023. That is, Indonesia received the green light to join the alliance at that time.
However, the country officially announced its decision to join BRICS after the presidential election held last year. The new President of Indonesia, Subianto Prabowo, took office last October. Then the country officially decided to join BRICS.
