Amid the ongoing war in Gaza, Israel is making a new strategy around the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque. The country’s hard-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gavir has claimed that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s administration has allowed Jews to pray in the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

Israeli media The Times of Israel reported that Jewish prayer was prohibited at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem for the past few decades. But now that ban is going to be broken.

“I went to the Temple Mount last week and we are praying there,” Itamar Ben Gavir told the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on Wednesday. The Netanyahu administration has allowed Jews to pray on the Temple Mount. However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu dismissed this claim as false.

He said the previous rules regarding Al-Aqsa prayers will remain in place. However, analysts say, if Ben Gavir’s claim is true, it will increase tensions between Israel and Arab countries.

Before addressing the US Congress, Netanyahu’s office said the status quo on the Temple Mount has not and will not change.

Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is the third holiest site for Muslims after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel has imposed various restrictions on access to Al Aqsa Mosque. This time, Israel has taken a new strategy to break the ban.
