Israeli attack ‘heinous crime’, Lebanon PM calls for immediate ceasefire

Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati described the Israeli attack on Lebanon as a “heinous crime” and “extremely disrespectful” to the international community.

He also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately appeal to the UN Security Council for a complete and immediate ceasefire.

“Lebanon is basically a victim of Israeli arrogance,” Mikati said at a press conference organized after a government meeting in Beirut on Friday. “Our sovereignty is being violated and the global silence on these crimes by Israel is alarming to us.”

The border war between Israel and Hezbollah has continued since the war in Gaza began. Recently, Israel launched massive airstrikes and ground attacks on Lebanon. Israel’s ground offensive has so far killed more than 1,300 people and displaced 1.2 million.

In this regard, Najib Mikati said that more than 600 schools in Lebanon are currently being used as shelters for the displaced and plans are underway to establish more shelters.

He expressed his commitment to the implementation of United Nations Resolution 1701 at this time. which calls for a cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and mandates the establishment of a demilitarized zone.

Regarding Hezbollah, Mikati said, “Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese government and they agree to the implementation of UN Resolution 1701.”

Meanwhile, Israeli forces launched a second attack in three days on the headquarters of a UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon on Friday, injuring two Sri Lankan peacekeepers.
