The Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo received the Nobel Peace Prize this year. The organization received this award for working towards achieving a world free of nuclear weapons. Interest in the organization grew after receiving the award. The reason why this organization got the Nobel is being discussed.
The organization was formed by survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Then it was called Hibakusha. Since its inception, the organization has been working towards a world free of nuclear weapons. This year, the committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to this organization amid tensions over nuclear bombs around the world.
In this regard, the Norwegian Nobel Committee says, “This award proves that nuclear weapons should never be used again.”
The Nobel Committee also says, ‘One day, the atomic bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be among us as witnesses of history. But a strong culture in their memory will allow new generations of Japan to pass on their experiences and messages.’
Dan Smith, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), expressed his delight at the hibakusha receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He said, ‘As Soviet and US leaders Gorbachev and Reagan said in 1985, a nuclear war can never be won and should never be fought. Hibakusha reminds us of that every day.’
The Nobel committee praised Nihon Hidankyo for helping to maintain the nuclear ban. Said, ‘This is the prerequisite for a peaceful future for humanity. No nuclear weapon has been used in war in nearly 80 years. This year’s award comes at a time when the ban against the use of nuclear weapons is under pressure.
