Kolkata, India, has become devoid of tourists. The economy of a large part of the city has collapsed. Many are forced to look for new businesses in the face of the closure of businesses dependent on Bangladeshi tourists.

Hotels in the New Market area of Kolkata, India, closed at the beginning of the new year. Only a handful of Bangladeshi tourists are in this city. The rent for a room that used to cost 2,000 rupees has now come down to 600 rupees. Still, there are no buyers.

In this situation, the food shops are empty. There are no buyers in shawl and cloth shops. The number of bus passengers on the Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata route has plummeted. Where there used to be 30-35 buses plying daily, it has come down to 5 to 10.

In the New Market area of central Kolkata, there are 10 to 12 important roads, including Sadar Street, Marquis Street, Mirza Ghalib, Rafi Ahmed Kidoy Street. And on both sides of these roads, there are hundreds of small and large businesses. All of them are dependent on Bangladeshi tourists.

Bangladeshi tourists say that their visas have expired and we don’t know when they will be issued again. If we hurry up, we will be able to visit again.

On the other hand, Kolkata businessmen say that their target is not being met. The target will be met when the tourists come.

Kolkata businessmen could not have imagined that the picture has changed overnight after August 5. Therefore, the victims want an end to this ongoing crisis as soon as possible.

It is reported that the last tourist visa was issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on August 13, 2024.
