Myanmar army chief vows to hand over power to elected government

Myanmar’s National Assembly Chairman and Army Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has announced the transfer of power to an elected government through general elections.
He made the pledge in a message to mark the country’s 77th Independence Day on Saturday (January 4).
National Executive Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said the ultimate goal of the State Executive Council is to successfully hold a free and fair multi-party democratic general election.
“I pledge that we will continue to work to ensure that the new government can take charge of the state through an orderly, fair and dignified election,” said General Min Aung Hlaing.
