Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “We live in a world where children are dying from bombs. I can say frankly that none of us are safe.”
He made the call to various heads of state and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a video message on Thursday (September 12).
In his message, Erdogan highlighted the upcoming UN conference as an important opportunity to strengthen international solidarity, work towards a peaceful, secure and just global order.
He described the summit as a rare opportunity to address ongoing global conflicts, oppression, hunger and poverty.
He called on the summit participants to make full use of the opportunities presented by Guterres and emphasized the need for peace to build a secure and prosperous future.
Erdogan cited the situation in Gaza as a tragic example, pointing to the serious geopolitical implications of challenges such as terrorism, xenophobia and climate change.
Regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, he said, we are facing a situation where more than 41,000 people, including 17,000 children, have lost their lives and more than 100,000 people have been injured. Besides, Gaza is almost destroyed.
The Turkish president said that it is essential that the international community, especially the United Nations, raise a stronger voice against Israel’s policy of occupation. In a world we live in where children are dying from bombs, I frankly say that none of us can feel safe. As Turks, we will continue to stand against oppression and on the side of the oppressed, and we will not back down from this humanitarian position.
He added that our democracy must fight against all forms of hate speech, racism and extreme right-wing movements that poison our society. To achieve these very goals we need to rebuild a multilateral system focused on justice.
