The North Korean army will completely cut off the roads and railways connected to South Korea. All roads and railways will be cut off from Wednesday, they said.
North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said the country would further strengthen areas along the border. The announcement, however, led to an increase in military activity near the demarcation line that divides the two Koreas. Reuters.
Relations between the two choirs have soured over the past few years. After a few days, Pyongyang and Seoul did not stop taunting each other.
It is reported that this move by North Korea is seen as part of the cancellation of an inter-Korean agreement signed by the country in 1991. In a statement published by KCNA, the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army said the announcement came in response to military exercises held in South Korea. They termed this exercise as the ‘Primary Enemy State and Immutable Principal Enemy’.
He also accused the US of frequent inspections of strategic nuclear assets in the region.
Also in July, South Korea’s military alleged that North Korea had planted landmines, fenced off wastelands along the heavily militarized border for months this year, despite the accident.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the United Nations Command (UNC) has been informed of the incident, but did not elaborate. However, they also said that South Korea is in contact with the UNC regarding North Korea’s announcement.
The US-led UNC is a multinational military force and oversees the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas. Earlier, in early 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced that he was no longer seeking reunification with the South. Through his announcement, there was a threat of war on the Korean peninsula.
Notably, the US-led UNC is a multinational military force and oversees affairs in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas. A ‘demilitarized zone’ is an area where agreements between states, military powers or rival groups or military installations, activities or personnel are prohibited.
